What is continuous rating and peak rating

To put it simply, continuous rating is what the motor can handle all day long, while peak output capacity is the absolute max power it can burst into for short periods when things get tough.

Think of it like a human runner: your continuous rating is your jogging pace that you can maintain for miles, while your peak capacity is your all-out, muscles-burning sprint to the finish line.

Here is exactly how they break down for a mobility scooter or electric vehicle motor:

1. Continuous (Nominal) Rating: The Marathon Runner

The continuous rating is the maximum power a motor can safely output indefinitely without overheating, melting its internal wires, or damaging the electrical system.

What it means for the Pride PX4 (320W): When you are cruising down a smooth, flat concrete sidewalk at a steady speed, the scooter is humming along using its continuous power rating. It can do this until the battery runs dry because the motor can easily dissipate the heat it generates at this level.

2. Peak Output Capacity: The Weightlifter

The peak capacity is the absolute maximum amount of power the motor can generate, but only for short bursts (usually lasting anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes).

What it means for the Pride PX4 (1250W): When you approach a steep hill, drive through thick grass, or hit a curb, the scooter's controller detects the extra resistance. It floods the motor with extra electrical current, jumping the power up to its peak capacity. This gives you the massive torque needed to push through the obstacle without getting stuck.
The Catch: The motor cannot stay at peak capacity for long. Because it generates an immense amount of heat, running at peak power continuously would quickly burn out the motor. Once you clear the hill or the grass, the system cools down and drops back to its continuous level.

Why do manufacturers use both?

If a manufacturer built a scooter that ran at 1250 watts continuously, the motor would have to be massive, heavy, and it would drain the battery incredibly fast.
