Three kinds of ramp, one question: how big is the rise?

Threshold and entry — for door sills, lips and raised landings: the TRANSITIONS Angled Entry Plate (single plate, rises to 2 in), the TRANSITIONS Modular Entry Ramp (seven sizes, 0.75 to 6.25 in), the vertically adjustable TRANSITIONS Angled Entry Ramp (about 2 to 5-7/8 in) and the rubber Angled Entry Mat.

Portable — folding ramps you carry to a step, a van or a curb: the SUITCASE Singlefold, Singlefold AS and TRIFOLD AS, and the Travel Buggy telescoping ramp.

Semi-permanent home entry — the GATEWAY 3G solid-surface ramp for steps and porches, with optional handrails.

Buying guide

What type of ramp do I need?

Start with the rise — the vertical distance from the lower surface to the top of the step or threshold — then the ramp type follows.

  • Rise up to 2 in: a threshold plate (TAEP) or the low sizes of the Modular Entry Ramp. Single doorsills and sliding-door tracks.
  • Rise up to about 6 in: the Modular Entry Ramp (fixed sizes in quarter-inch bands) or the Angled Entry Ramp (adjusts vertically, so it suits a rise that does not sit neatly in one band).
  • One or two steps, a van or a curb you visit rather than live with: a folding SUITCASE ramp or a telescoping ramp. Longer is gentler: EZ-ACCESS's guidance for occupied wheelchairs is 1 ft of ramp for every 1 in of rise (a 1:12 slope), and 1 ft for every 2 in when the chair is unoccupied and being pushed.
  • A porch or entry used every day: the GATEWAY 3G, a solid-surface ramp in 3 to 10 ft lengths that installs semi-permanently, with handrail options.

Check three numbers before you buy

  • Capacity: TRANSITIONS threshold ramps and SUITCASE ramps are rated 700 lb; GATEWAY 3G is rated 1,000 lb. Include the mobility device's weight.
  • Width: TRANSITIONS plates are 32 in, the Modular Entry Ramp 34 in, SUITCASE ramps 30 in usable; measure the door and the device's wheelbase.
  • Landing space: the ramp's full length must sit flat on the lower surface; the Modular Entry Ramp's removable sections and the plate's short length help in tight hallways.

EZ-ACCESS publishes an incline guide and a tech-spec sheet for every ramp; we link them on each product page. Unsure about a measurement? Call (803) 926-1493 and we will size it with you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure the rise?
Measure vertically from the lower floor or ground to the top surface of the step or threshold. For a doorway, measure both sides if the floors differ; the ramp goes on the lower side.
How long should a portable ramp be?
EZ-ACCESS's guidance for an occupied wheelchair or scooter is 1 ft of ramp per 1 in of rise (a 1:12 slope); for an unoccupied chair being pushed, 1 ft per 2 in. A 12 in step therefore calls for a 12 ft ramp when occupied.
Which threshold ramp adjusts?
The TRANSITIONS Angled Entry Ramp adjusts vertically within its length's range. The Angled Entry Plate and the Modular Entry Ramp are fixed sizes chosen for a specific rise; the Modular ramp's pivoting flap adds about a quarter inch.
Do EZ-ACCESS ramps carry a warranty?
EZ-ACCESS covers its parts and components against defects for the lifetime of the product for the original purchaser; applied slip-resistant surfaces and coatings are wear items. The warranty document is linked on each product page.
Do you ship ramps free?
Threshold ramps and folding ramps ship free as parcels in the continental US; GATEWAY 3G lengths over 6 ft ship freight, free to the curb.
