Buying guide

Folding or take-apart: how the scooter gets into the car

A folding scooter collapses into one package that you lift or roll like luggage. A take-apart (disassembling) scooter separates into several lighter pieces, usually the seat, battery, front and rear, so no single lift is as heavy but you handle more pieces. If one person will load it alone, compare the heaviest single piece, not just the total weight. The scooter finder asks how you will transport it and filters on exactly these numbers.

The lightest folding scooters (under 40 lb)

All five carry up to 275 lb, reach 4 mph and list about 9 miles of range on a removable 10 Ah lithium battery. Weights are as listed by Monarch; check each product page for whether the figure includes the battery.

Flying with a folding scooter

US rules limit a lithium-ion battery in a mobility device to 300 watt-hours, with one spare up to 300 Wh or two spares up to 160 Wh each in carry-on bags (FAA PackSafe). Airlines can be stricter, so check the battery's watt-hour rating on the product page and tell the airline before you fly. A product is airline-ready only where its page says so.

Frequently asked questions

What is the lightest folding mobility scooter?
The Monarch Genie Ultralight at 27 lb and the Monarch Supa Carbon Lite at 29 lb are the lightest we sell. Both carry up to 275 lb.
What is the difference between a folding and a travel scooter?
A folding scooter collapses in one piece. Many travel scooters instead take apart into several lighter pieces. Both are sold as travel scooters; the right one depends on whether you would rather lift one package or several lighter ones.
Can I take a folding scooter on a plane?
US rules allow a lithium-ion mobility battery up to 300 Wh, with one spare up to 300 Wh or two up to 160 Wh in carry-on. Airlines set their own procedures, so contact yours before travel and check the battery rating on the product page.
Do auto-folding scooters need to be charged to fold?
Yes. Auto-folding models such as the Mojo, Transformer 2, Monarch Genie Auto and Smarti Plus use the scooter's battery to fold and unfold, so keep the battery charged.
