Walker or rollator: start with how much support you need

A walker gives the most support. You lean on the frame with every step, so it suits someone who needs to take weight through their arms or feels unsteady standing. A rollator rolls along with you, has hand brakes and usually a seat, so it suits someone who can walk on their own but tires or needs to stop and rest. A rollator transport chair adds footrests, so a companion can push you home when you have walked as far as you can.

Folding walkers (no seat)

Getting the fit right

Stand upright in your usual shoes with your arms relaxed: the handles should line up with the crease of your wrist. Choose a seat you can sit on with your feet flat on the floor, and a weight rating at or above the user's weight. For outdoor use, larger front wheels (8 to 10 in.) roll over thresholds, pavement joints and gravel more easily than the 6 in. wheels on compact indoor models. If the walker has to go in a car, compare the weight and folded size on each product page.

Add a basket, tray or cane holder from walker accessories. If walking any distance is no longer realistic, compare transport chairs and manual wheelchairs.
