Manual, hydraulic or powered

A hydraulic lift (BestLift PL400H, BestStand SA400H, SA228H, SA182H) raises the patient when the caregiver pumps a handle; it needs no battery and is the lowest-cost way to make a safe transfer. A powered lift (BestLift PL400HE, PL400, PL500, PL600 and the BestStand electric series) lifts at the press of a hand pendant from a rechargeable 24 V battery, so the caregiver guides rather than pumps. The PL400H can be upgraded to electric later with a kit.

Full-body lift or sit-to-stand

Full-body floor lifts (BestLift PL182, PL228, PL400, PL500, PL600) carry the whole person in a sling from bed to chair, commode or wheelchair, and can lift from the floor. Capacities run from 400 lb to 600 lb.
Sit-to-stand lifts (BestStand SA182, SA228, SA400, SA500, SA600) support someone who can bear some weight on their legs and follow instructions, raising them to standing for toileting and short transfers. Capacities run from 400 lb to 600 lb.
Overhead systems such as the LRT Lift-Rotate-Transfer mount floor-to-ceiling and swing a portable motor over the bed or chair when a rolling base will not fit the room.

Lift range, base width and the room

Check the lift range against the surfaces you transfer between: the PL500 lifts from 28.7 in. to 72.2 in., and the foldable PL400EF from 18.5 in. up to 67.2 in. The base legs open wider to straddle a chair and close to pass through doorways; the PL500's base is 26 in. wide closed, and the compact PL400EF base is 32 in. The base also has to slide under the bed, so measure the clearance under your bed frame before choosing.

Slings and compatibility

Every lift needs a sling matched to the transfer. Full-body and U-slings suit bed-to-chair moves, toileting slings open at the seat, mesh slings are for bathing, and stand-assist slings fit only the BestStand lifts. BestCare lifts use a 6-point spreader bar; our Patient Lift Slings pages state which lift models and sizes each sling fits. Choose the sling size from the patient's weight and body measurements, and have a therapist or nurse confirm the fit.

Caregiver, storage and batteries

Powered lifts weigh 82 to 125 lb and roll on casters; the foldable PL400EF (90 lb) stores in a closet or car trunk. Batteries are 24 V rechargeable packs supplied with a charger; keep a spare battery charged so the lift is never out of service. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a full-body patient lift and a sit-to-stand lift?

A full-body lift carries the whole person in a sling and can lift from bed, chair or the floor. A sit-to-stand lift raises someone who can bear some weight on their legs to a standing position for toileting and short transfers; it needs the person to hold on and follow instructions.

Do I need a powered lift, or is hydraulic enough?

A hydraulic lift such as the BestLift PL400H does the same transfers for less money, but the caregiver pumps the handle for every lift. Powered lifts (PL400HE, PL400, PL500, PL600) lift from a battery with a hand pendant, which matters when transfers happen many times a day or the caregiver has limited strength.

Which sling fits my lift?

BestCare lifts use a 6-point spreader bar and take BestCare full-body, U-slings, toileting and mesh bathing slings; stand-assist slings fit only the BestStand sit-to-stand lifts. Each sling page in Patient Lift Slings lists the lift models and sizes it fits.

Will the lift fit under my bed and through my doors?

Measure the clearance under the bed frame and your narrowest doorway. The base legs close to pass doorways (the PL500 base is 26 in. wide closed) and open to straddle a chair; the compact PL400EF has a 32 in. base and folds for storage.

How much weight can these lifts hold?

Floor lifts in this collection are rated from 400 lb (PL182, PL400 series) to 500 lb (PL228, PL500) and 600 lb (PL600); sit-to-stand lifts run from 400 lb to 600 lb. Always choose a rating above the patient's weight.
