Overview
A staircase and a wheelchair platform lift in the same footprint — the steps flatten into a platform, so one opening serves people who walk and people who roll. Liftup describes it as a 2-in-1 solution that saves space against installing both a flight of stairs and a separate lift or ramp.

Which model fits your rise
The FlexStep is built in eight versions. The number of steps sets the rise it covers; the “+1” and “+2” versions keep the same rise but give a longer platform, which is what a larger power chair usually needs. Figures are approximate and confirmed on site.

Steps, handrails and finishes
The step inserts are what make a FlexStep look like part of the house rather than a piece of equipment, and they are chosen per project.
- Indoor wood inserts. Ash, beech, cherry, mahogany, oak, oak plank, pine and walnut, finished in oil or varnish.
- Outdoor wood insert. Mahogany plank, finished in oil.
- Other inserts. 12 mm plywood, aluminium plate made to take tiles, and checker-plate aluminium.
- Your own flooring. Liftup supports customer-supplied flooring for the steps — the aluminium insert is made to receive tile, and wood reclaimed from the building itself can be used so the lift matches what is already there.
- Handrails. Flat bar, round bar or round wood, in stainless steel, painted steel or a wood chosen to match the steps.
- Balustrades. Square profiles indoors or outdoors; round profiles indoors only.
- Top-landing protection. An automatic vertical barrier that stays hidden until it is needed, a left- or right-hand swing door, restraining arms that fold away, or the access ramp itself, which locks upright as roll-off protection whenever the lift is carrying someone.
Step inserts are 273 mm (10.74") deep; the wood inserts are 18 mm thick and thinner inserts leave room for your own covering. See Liftup's step insert options (PDF).
What the site needs
- A level floor and a smooth vertical wall face alongside the steps — the lift fixes to that wall.
- At least 2000 mm (79") of headroom above the platform across its whole travel.
- Enough width: the platform width plus 300 mm (11.81").
- A normal power outlet within reach of the installation.
- Ordinary room lighting at the landing edge — the lift carries emergency lighting only, for a power cut.
- Clear space beside the open sides of the platform, which we measure during the assessment.

Both, in the same footprint. It stands as an ordinary flight of steps and, at the press and hold of a control, the treads level out into a platform that carries a wheelchair or scooter between the two landings. That is why it suits an opening too tight to hold a staircase and a separate lift or ramp.
400 kg (881 lb) evenly distributed, up to two people. It has overload protection that sounds a warning and stops the lift rather than moving an overloaded platform. Below about −20 °C the manufacturer derates it to 200 kg, which only matters for an exposed outdoor installation.
Between two and six. There are eight versions in total: the step count sets the rise covered, and the “+1” and “+2” versions add platform length without changing the rise, which is usually what a larger power wheelchair needs.
It is designed to stand on the finished floor rather than in a pit, and it fixes to the wall alongside the steps. What it does need is a level floor, a smooth vertical wall face, room for the platform width plus 300 mm, at least 79 inches of headroom and a power outlet in reach. Whether any preparation is needed at your property is exactly what the free assessment establishes — we will not promise there is none before we have seen it.
The lift runs from batteries that the mains supply keeps charged, so it keeps working through an outage — Liftup rates a full charge at about 30 cycles. There is emergency lighting, and documented emergency procedures for releasing the barrier or door.
That is the point of the design. Step inserts come in ash, beech, cherry, mahogany, oak, oak plank, pine and walnut for indoors, mahogany for outdoors, and in plywood, checker-plate aluminium or an aluminium plate made to take tile. Liftup will also work with flooring you supply, including wood reclaimed from the building, and handrails and balustrades can be matched to it.
Yes. The outdoor build uses a stainless steel frame with sealed and protected electronics. One detail worth knowing early: round balustrades are an indoor option only, so an outdoor installation uses the square profile.
There is an infrared light curtain watching every gap between the steps and the platform, two sensors per step plus one for the ramp, and pressure plates under each step and on both side frames. If anything is detected the lift stops, backs off about 0.8 inch and sounds an alarm. The access ramp locks upright as roll-off protection whenever the platform is carrying someone.
