‘Home sweet home’. There’s no feeling like it. It doesn’t matter whether you’re returning home from vacation or a hospital stay, your home is your castle. It’s where you feel safe, secure and comfortable. If you’re returning from the hospital though your condition may require a hospital bed. Affordable Medical Equipment has all you need for your hospital bed requirements. Rent or purchase, we’re ready to assist.

According to Caregiver University, the pros of a hospital bed are as follows:Patients can easily make bed adjustments independently with the touch of a button. <They are> Ideal for use in almost any care environment for any patient’s needs”, and finally, they’re a “great solution for patients who need frequent adjustment or older caregivers with less physical strength.”

Know Your Need

For most that are recovering from illness or in a chronic long-term care situation, a hospital bed is going to be a better option than a typical bed. The right hospital bed can be more comfortable than a regular bed, safer, and easier on the caregiver. If the bed is for recovery (less than 3 months), you will come out far better renting than purchasing. If it is a chronic long-term situation, you probably want to look at purchase. Make sure your vendor offers both and can explain the advantages of each.

Required Features

Hospital bed rentals and/or purchases are available from Affordable Medical Equipment. Though manual beds are an option, it’s not one we would recommend – it’s a lot of work for you or the caregiver. We are going to recommend a semi-electric or a full-electric bed. The semi-electric offers an electric motor to move the back and legs up and down, independent of one another. The full electric moves the bed itself up and down as well.  This is the optimal set-up for a short-term recovery or a chronic long-term illness.

The Lumex Patriot series

The Lumex Patriot series of hospital beds from manufacturer Graham-Field are as fine a quality as you’ll find. According to one independent study, the “Lumex Patriot is one of the top five hospital beds.” Leading the list of pros for the Patriot – a steel deck instead of a spring combination. This makes for better mattress support – especially with heavier patients. Additionally, the deck is covered by an anti-microbial technology that protects against bacteria and odor. Our customer Linda V. concurred, saying, “if you need a hospital bed, I highly recommend this one.” The Patriot comes with a 6” rolled high-density foam mattress that provides excellent comfort. Finally, the Lumex comes with half or full rails.

Accessories

Accessories are generally inexpensive and can provide a better quality for the patient and help ease the burden on the caregiver.  A Lumex bedside table is a good start.  If the patient suffers from the pain of pressure ulcers the Lumex LS 200 Alternating Pressure Mattress will provide ongoing relief and support via an air cycling system.  We rent as well as sell the LS 200 and 300 alternating pressure mattress systems.  The Lumex Bed Alarm alerts a caregiver to an instance where the patient is attempting to get out of bed.
